We had to go to the main Navy base here in San Diego today to get a few legal papers notarized and to update my ID card. While there, CNN was turned on and we saw the news about the shootings at VA Tech. As I watched, I could not but help think back a few years when an incident like this happened at Penn State. Thankfully, I was not living on campus at that time and fewer people were killed and injured, but nonetheless, this type of occurance at a place you consider home shakes you to the core. When you hear of something this horrible, you can't help but feel a multitude of feelings ranging from rage to sympathy. Why and how did it happen to begin with? Why was he able to make it to a second building 2 hours after the first rampage and kill even more people? I can't imagine what the students there are feeling right now - pure terror comes to my mind - and the parents who may still be waiting to know if one of their own lost their lives for some senseless reason. How will they all cope? This morning the number of deceased students was 22 and now it is over 30. Simply horrifying. It makes me continue to question my decision to bring children into a world like this.
Seeing as I will soon be a Virginian (again), I just wanted to express my condolences to the families and friends of the students who lost their lives today at VA Tech. It might not be much, but at least by addressing it on my blog I can say I care.
